Follow Elon Musk's money

The biggest reason for the imbalance in Texas is one donor. Elon Musk is the largest known individual contributor of the 2026 cycle. FEC filings through the quarter ending September 30 itemize $332.6 million in federal contributions from him since January 2025 — nearly all of it to Republican committees — plus another $36.3 million that his America PAC reported as memo entries. About $272 million of it came in July, August and September alone. That already approaches the roughly $290 million he spent in the entire 2024 presidential cycle.

Much of it went to Texas. The filings show a precise pattern:

  • On September 9, Musk gave $75 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main Republican Senate super PAC. On September 10, SLF transferred $75 million to Texas PAC.
  • On September 23, Musk gave SLF $83 million. On September 24, SLF transferred $83 million to Texas PAC.

Those two transfers — $158.0 million — are the only receipts Texas PAC has reported. Musk also gave $10 million directly to another pro-Paxton super PAC, Lone Star Liberty PAC, and his own America PAC has spent $24.3 million in the Texas general election. Counting only committees that Musk money substantially funds, $190.2 million — 79% of all outside money backing Paxton — came through Musk-funded vehicles.

Elsewhere, Musk gave $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund (the Republican House super PAC), $10 million to Fight for Kentucky (which backed Nate Morris in Kentucky's GOP Senate primary), and $5 million each to MAGA Inc. and V-PAC.

What the filings do and don't show: money is fungible, and SLF did not report the Musk gifts as earmarked. The record shows identical amounts moving one day apart, not an agreement — but it is the clearest money trail between a single donor and a single race this cycle. These are only the contributions Musk made in his own name. Reporting by The New York Times indicates he has also given through groups that do not disclose their donors; that money is, by design, not in these numbers.
